Cupping - Hijama
What is Cupping (hijama)?
Cupping (hijama) is the best remedy recommended and used by the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wassallam. The Messenger said
"Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…" [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)].
He also said that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) he did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, "Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)].
This shows the importance and greatness of this Sunnah.
Cupping (hijama) is of three types:
Dry cupping (hijama) - This is the process of using a vacuum on different areas of the body in order to gather the blood in that area without incisions (small, light scratches using a sterile surgical blade or).
Dry massage cupping (hijama) - This is similar to dry cupping but olive oil is applied to the skin (before applying the cups) in order to allow easy movement of the cups.
70% of diseases, pains and ailments are due to the blood being unable to reach certain parts of the body. Dry cupping and dry massaging cupping allow the blood to reach these places.
Dry and massage cupping may be self-administered in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
Dry and massage cupping may be administered any time of the day, any day of the week or month. There are no restrictions.
Although dry and massage cupping are very beneficial, they are not from the Sunnah.
Wet cupping (hijama) - This is the process of using a vacuum at different points on the body but with incisions in order to remove 'harmful' blood which lies just beneath the surface of the skin. (It is recommended that wet cupping (hijama) is only administered by a cupping therapist).
Wet cupping (hijama) may only be administered at certain times of the day and days of the week.
"Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].
The Benefits of Cupping Therapy
Cupping/Hijama Therapy gets rid of acidic toxic waste which accumulate in our bodies (blood stasis) as we grow older. Sources of toxic waste include the polluted air we breathe; toxic chemicals found in your food, water, drinks, household chemicals & toiletries; environmental waste in your neighbourhood; intoxicating drinks, narcotic drugs, junk food and smoking; waste products of normal body metabolism; products of medicinal drugs metabolism; impact of trauma and accidents on our body; and toxins from mental stress, anger, anxiety and depression.
The blood stasis (stagnated or congested blood) slow down or block supply of blood via blood capillaries which deliver much needed oxygen, nutrients, water, mineral electrolyte, vitamins, enzymes, hormones and immune system cells & antibodies to your cells, tissues and organ. The blockage also prevent the removal of carbon dioxide, metabolic waste products and toxic substance which are excreted via our urine, lungs and skin. As a result your cells, tissues, and organs cannot function at its normal healthy level and become progressively weak, inefficient, and easily overcome by germs. This would cause tissue or organ to malfunction and infection to take place.
Therefore you will experience symptoms of diseases such as aches and pain, numbness, fever, cough, stomach ache, constipation, diarrhoea and headaches. If left untreated further accumulation of toxic waste may lead to serious chronic diseases including hypertension, ulcers, diabetes, arthritis, alzheimer disease, migraine, heart disease, infertility, stroke and cancer.
Cupping helps rid toxins and improves blood circulation. This helps transport a heathy flow of blood to our reproductive organs giving them all the nutrients, oxygen, vitamins and minerals they need to produce healthy sperm and ovums and to help build a healthy endometrium to nourish and sustain a pregnancy.
